Disney has taken the story of one of the best loved ballets and turned it into a glittering new movie with a star-studded cast. It is no wonder that they have brought the story of the Nutcracker out at Christmas as it is a well-loved tradition to watch the Nutcracker Ballet at Christmas for many, many dancers.

The Story of the Nutcracker

It is Christmas Eve and Clara is presented with a gift and a key to unlock it, this then leads Clara into another world which includes the land of sweets, the land of snowflakes and the land of flowers who are at war with the land of amusements. The story unfolds as Clara meets characters from each of these realms including the sugar plum fairy and culminates in a battle involving life sized solider toys and Clara eventually restoring peace to the land inside the gift from her mother.

The new Disney version of the Nutcracker is a festive feast for the eyes and features stars such as Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman who bring Clara’s story to life. As ballet has been such a huge part of the Nutcracker storytelling in the past it also features Misty Copeland who is a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre company and an inspirational figure herself.

Misty Copeland Ballet Dancer

The story of Misty Copeland became the first black female principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre and she serves as an inspiration to follow your dreams given her often difficult childhood. Her story proves that with enough work and dedication it is possible to follow your dreams and in her case her dream was to become a ballerina.

Misty had a very non-traditional route into ballet with family problems when she was growing up, followed by injuries and some health problems at the start of her career to battling racism as she rose through the ranks of ballet companies. A positive role model to everyone Misty embodies the positivity of ballet and dance and her inclusion as a dancer in the Disney movie is a credit to her dance ability and positive energy.

Bringing ballet to new audiences is something that Misty actively seeks out, from her speaking engagement and book deals, to her involvement in the brand adverts for Under Armour and now showcasing her talent in a Disney Movie, Misty’s reach is certainly far and wide.

More recently the ballet shoe maker Freed has started to make pointe shoes for darker skin tones showing eventually a need to create shoes that are not simply all pink – perhaps ballet tights will follow!

Love for Ballet

With Misty Copeland blazing a trail for everyone to follow and Disney reimagining the ballet story of The Nutcracker to be shown to a much wider audience, the love for ballet has never been stronger as opportunities continue to explode for those who love this art form.
